Ole Miss Women's Tennis Continues On The Road

3/28/2007 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women’s tennis team continues on the road this weekend as they travel to Baton Rouge and Fayetteville for a pair of matches.  On Friday, the Lady Rebels will face LSU at 3 p.m. at the Dub T. Robinson Stadium.

Ole Miss, which has been battling the injury-bug all season, will look to gain its first SEC win of the season.    The Lady Rebels lost to Vanderbilt and Kentucky last weekend to fall to 4-12 on the year.

Senior Ilona Somers continues to be the lone constant for the Lady Rebels. The 2006 All-SEC honoree is ranked No. 97 with a 10-5 record at No. 1 singles, including 2-3 in the SEC.

LSU comes into the match with an 8-7 overall record, 1-5 in the SEC.  They are coming off a 6-1 loss to Florida.  Prior to that, the Lady Tigers dropped a tight 4-3 decision to South Carolina.  LSU is led by freshman Megan Falcon, who remained undefeated at No. 1 singles (15-0) and improved to 25-2 overall, 6-0 in the SEC. She is ranked No. 2 in the nation in singles.

Ole Miss leads the overall series 20-11 and 14-4 since 1990.  In addition, the Lady Rebels have won four of the last six meetings under head coach Mark Beyers. The Lady Rebels defeated the Lady Tigers 5-0 last year in Oxford.  The last time the two teams met in Baton Rouge (2005), Ole Miss won 5-2.

On Sunday, the Lady Rebels will square off against Arkansas at 1 p.m., at the UA Varsity Courts.

Arkansas enters the weekend at 7-8 overall and 0-6 in the SEC.  They are coming off a 7-0 loss to South Carolina last Sunday.  The Lady’Backs are led by Ela Kaluder who is 11-3 at No. 1 singles. She knocked off Florida’s No. 1 player in the team’s loss to the Gators last Friday.

Ole Miss leads the series 18-6 and has won four of the last five meetings.   Arkansas won a close 4-3 encounter last year in Oxford in a match which last seven hours and had to be concluded indoors.  Prior to that loss, the Lady Rebels had outscored the Lady’Backs 25-3 in the previous four meetings.

Live scoring for both matches will be available at www.olemisssports.com.
