Lady Rebel Netters To Host Alabama/Auburn This Weekend

3/8/2007 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss women’s tennis team will host Alabama and Auburn this weekend in its SEC home opener.  The Lady Rebels and the Crimson Tide will square of Friday at 4 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.

Friday is “3 Guys Pizza Day” as fans will receive free pizza compliments of 3 Guys Pizza.

The Lady Rebels (4-7, 0-1), who have battled injuries all season, are looking to snap a five-match losing streak and win their first conference match of the season.  Junior Preethi Subramanian returned to the lineup against South Carolina after missing all of the fall and the beginning of the season with injury.

After being on the road for the last four matches, the players and coaches are excited to finally return home where they are 4-2 this year.

“We are glad to be back at home,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “Despite the adversity, the team is continuing to work hard in practice every day.  Hopefully we can come out play well and get back on the winning track this weekend.

“The weather Friday is supposed to be pleasant. We would like to encourage everyone to come out and enjoy a nice day at the tennis center with free pizza.”

Alabama enters the match with a 4-5 overall record, 0-2 in the SEC.  They lost both their conference matches last weekend, falling to Vanderbilt, 7-0 and Kentucky, 4-3.  The Crimson Tide feature only one senior and one junior. The rest of the team is made up of two sophomores and four freshmen.

Ole Miss leads the all-time series 27-10 and has won four of the last seven.  Alabama edged Ole Miss 4-3 last year in Tuscaloosa.

Sunday’s 1 p.m., match against Auburn is “Oxford T-shirt Company T-shirt Giveaway.”  The first 50 fans at the match will receive a free t-shirt.

Auburn heads into Friday’s match at Mississippi State with a 5-4 overall record, 0-2 in the SEC.  They are coming off a 5-2 loss to Vanderbilt on Sunday.  In their conference opener, the Tigers lost a close 4-3 match to Kentucky.  The Tigers have no seniors on their squad and only one junior. The rest are sophomores and freshmen.

Ole Miss leads the all-time series 23-9 and holds a 15-2 advantage since 1990.  The Lady Rebels won last year’s meeting, a 5-2 win at Auburn. The Tigers’ last win (4-3) in the series came in 2002.

Admission to both matches is free and live scoring is available at www.olemisssports.com.
