4/1/2007 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. - Grove Bowl 2007 not only provides Ole Miss fans with an excuse for tailgating and autograph hunting, but also benefits the M-Club's scholarship fund.

On Saturday, the Grove Bowl features the Rebels' football team at its annual spring intrasquad scrimmage in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Tickets, at $10 each, are available through the Ticket Office on All-American Drive, next to the Starnes Athletic Center. Call 662-915-7167 or visit the ticket office 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. On gameday, tickets are available in the Grove and at the ticket office. All proceeds benefit the M-Club's J.W. "Wobble" Davidson Scholarship Fund.

"The Grove Bowl gives our loyal fans a highly anticipated preview of the 2007 football team," said Sheila Hickman of Louisville, the first woman president of the M-Club. "Our members are excited and honored to organize the annual event in memory of one of our finest Rebels, Wobble Davidson."

Tailgating starts at 10 a.m. in the Grove with children's games and complimentary crawfish. Catfish, barbecue and chicken tenders can be purchased, as well as Grove Bowl t-shirts.

At 10:50 a.m., football players and coaches tread the traditional Walk of Champions as they head to Vaught-Hemingway. Stadium gates open at noon and kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

"We're always excited to play the spring game, which will again have a game-type atmosphere," said Ole Miss head hoach Ed Orgeron. "This game is the culmination of a lot of hard work. The players look forward to it, especially since a lot of them will have their parents in the stands. I expect a highly competitive game."

Other events of the weekend include a pair of matches for the Lady Rebel tennis team, a three-game baseball series between the Rebels and Georgia Bulldogs and the Ole Miss Invitational track and field meet. Admission to the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center is free, and call 662-915-7167 for ticket info on baseball and track.

The Ole Miss women's tennis team is kicking off Grove Bowl weekend Friday at 4 p.m., against No. 24 Tennessee, and the first 100 fans to the match will receive a free t-shirt, compliments of the Ink Spot. On Sunday, the Lady Rebels will face No. 3 Georgia at 1 p.m., and the first 50 fans to the match will receive a free Coca-Cola Bucket Hat.

The Rebel baseball squad will host UGA Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Ole Miss is currently ranked 10th in the nation and is off to its best start in two years.

The track meet is Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the Track and Field Complex on Hill Drive and is expected to run until 6 p.m. The first 250 fans at the meet will receive an Ole Miss water bottle courtesy of Coca-Cola.  As a team, the Rebels are 22nd in the latest polls and will be facing individuals from Alabama, Memphis, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and Tulane, as well as others.

In addition, the 18th annual Chucky Mullins Courage Award Banquet was held Friday at the Indoor Practice Facility. Ole Miss defensive lineman Jeremy Garrett of Senatobia, Miss., was selected as the 2007 recipient award, which goes to a rising senior defensive player each year.

The Chucky Mullins Courage Award Banquet is sponsored each year by Phi Beta Sigma and Phi Kappa Psi fraternities. Garrett, who will be recognized Saturday at the Grove Bowl, will have the honor of wearing a "38" patch on his jersey during his senior campaign.  Mullins wore No. 38 as a player at Ole Miss.

Free parking for Saturday's football game is available in the lot on the west side of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The lot adjacent to the Starnes Center is reserved for handicapped parking. Lots adjacent to the Track and Field Complex and the Indoor Practice Facility will be closed. Officials suggest that fans attending the track meet park in the nearby Mississippi Department of Transportation parking lot at the intersection of Highway 6 and Old Taylor Road.

Davidson, a three-sport star at Ole Miss and assistant football coach for 22 seasons under John Vaught, died in 1998 at age 79. As an assistant in 1945-68, he helped coach the Rebels to 16 bowl games and six Southeastern Conference championships. He also spent 11 years as head men's tennis coach and was adviser to the M-Club for 23 years.

The fund bearing his name awards scholarships to the children of former Ole Miss letterwinners.

The Ole Miss M-Club is an honor organization for men and women who have earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sanctioned sport sponsored by the university and have participated in a formal induction ceremony.
