Egg Bowl Moving To Friday, November 23 For Television

4/18/2007 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss and Mississippi State announced Wednesday that this year’s “Battle for the Golden Egg” will be played in Starkville on Friday, November 23, in order to accommodate television.  The game had been scheduled for Saturday, November 24.

“After not being on TV the last few years, it’s good to see the Ole Miss-Mississippi State game returning to television,” said Rebel head coach Ed Orgeron.  “We are excited about this opportunity and the exposure it brings to our program.”

It will mark the 13th time for a football game between Ole Miss and Mississippi State to be telecast on a regional or national basis, with the Rebels holding a 7-5 victory advantage.  Kickoff time for this year’s game at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field is set for noon and will be televised by one of the Southeastern Conference broadcast partners.

From 1996 to 2003, the “Egg Bowl” was televised, including six straight years by ESPN on Thanksgiving Night.   The Rebels and Bulldogs were first shown on TV in 1964 when NBC carried the game from Oxford.  The second game to be carried on TV was in 1964 when TBS aired the game played in Jackson.

Entering the 2007 season, Ole Miss has appeared on television 156 times since making its TV debut on January 1, 1953 when Coach John Vaught’s Rebels faced Georgia Tech in the Sugar Bowl. That game was telecast by ABC.

The Rebels’ history on television has been a storied one.  The memorable 1969 Ole Miss-Alabama game, which had national record-setting performances by Rebel quarterback Archie Manning and Tide signal-caller Scott Hunter, was the first college game televised at night.

Last season, Ole Miss appeared on national or regional TV six times and also had one game offered on a pay-per-view basis.
