Difficult Season Comes To An End For Lady Rebels
4/19/2007 | Women's Tennis
Ole Miss finished the season at 5-18 overall and 1-10 in the SEC, while the Tigers (16-8, 5-6) move on to face
The Lady Rebel team of Ilona Somers and Soledad Podlipnik defeated LSU’s Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg, 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, but the Tigers would grab the other two spots to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 3, Carlin Cochran and Kseniia Tokarieva trailed 6-1, before rallying to make it close. LSU closed it out 8-6, and then an 8-5 win at No. 2 clinched the point.
In singles, Falcon gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead when she beat Somers, 6-4, 6-3. The nation’s No. 2 ranked player and the SEC Player of the Year has not lost a match all season. Somers, ranked No. 39 in the country, will likely have a chance to continue her career, in the NCAA Singles Championships.
LSU also got straight-set wins on courts six and two to secure the win. The other matches were suspended when LSU clinched. Podlipnik was leading her match against Tiger Hannah Robinson, 7-6(6), 3-2 when the match was stopped.
“We got behind early in doubles, and couldn’t recover in time,” head coach Mark Beyers said. “If we were going to have a chance to win, we needed the doubles point. It’s been a trying season for everyone involved. We are going to get everybody healthy and work hard in the off-season to prepare for next year. We are happy that Ilona will be able to continue her season in the NCAA Individual Championships.”
