Rebels Take Down No. 4 South Carolina 8-5

4/20/2007 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. It was a big night at the plate for the Rebels’ Cody Overbeck on Friday night as No. 19 Ole Miss (26-14, 9-7 SEC) got three hits and a three-RBI performance out of the sophomore on the way to a 8-5 win over No. 4 South Carolina (30-9, 9-7 SEC).

Ole Miss pounded out 11 hits, including a home run from Evan Button, and took advantage of three South Carolina errors on the way to the series opening win. Overbeck led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance while Button went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jordan Henry also went 2-for-5 on the night.

Zack Cozart extended his hit streak to 12 games with a single in the first inning. It’s a career-long for the junior shortstop.

Will Kline (5-1) picked up the win as he worked 7.0 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Cody Satterwhite picked up his second save of the season as he closed out the game for the Rebels, allowing no hits in 2.0 innings of scoreless work. He walked two and struck out two on the night.

Harris Honeycutt (7-2) suffered the loss, only the second of his career, as he allowed six runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

“I thought we played really well tonight against a very good club,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “Will Kline didn’t have his best stuff tonight, but he battled out there. It was big to come back and answer South Carolina in the fourth after they tied the game.”

Ole Miss got on the board in the first with an RBI single to center from Overbeck that scored Cozart from second. Cozart singled then stole second to get into scoring position.

Button hit his second career home run in the second inning to push Ole Miss out to a 2-0 lead.

Overbeck came up with an RBI single through the left side in the third inning to drive Justin Henry in from third and put the Rebels up 3-0. Henry walked before stealing second. He moved the third on the play as the throw to the bag was high and went into center field.

South Carolina got things started in the fourth when a double from Harley Lail put a runner at second before Travis Jones was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. James Darnell then tripled to left center to push both runners across and cut the lead to 3-2 in favor of the Rebels. A groundout to first from Justin Smoak pushed Darnell across and tied the game at three.

Ole Miss answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to take a 6-3 lead. Brett Basham sparked the two-out rally with a single to left field before back-to-back singles from the Henry brothers pushed Basham across the plate and left runners at second and third for Cozart. Cozart reached on a fielding error at third that allowed both Henry brothers to score before he was thrown out at second to end the inning.

The Gamecocks mounted another rally in the sixth when Smoak came up with a bloop single to shallow left center with runners at the corners. The hit pushed Lail across from third and put runners at first and second with the lead cut to 6-4 in favor of Ole Miss. A walk of Gamecock catcher Trent Kline loaded the bases with one out. South Carolina opted to send pinch hitter Robbie Grinestaff to the plate. Grinestaff hit into a double play at second, ending the inning with the Rebels still holding to the lead.

Jordan Henry tripled to open the seventh inning before scoring on an RBI single to short from Overbeck to put Ole Miss back out by three at 7-4.

Travis Jones opened the eighth with a double to the wall before the Rebels turned to the bullpen and brought in Satterwhite. A wild pitch moved Jones to third before a groundout to short from Darnell got an out on the board, but pushed Jones across to cut the lead to 7-5. Satterwhite then recorded a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.

Satterwhite then closed out the ninth for the Rebels, preserving the win as he picked up the save.

Ole Miss and South Carolina will play the second game of the series at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
