Rebels Fall To Gamecocks 11-9 In Series Finale

4/22/2007 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. After silencing the Gamecock bats for two straight games, there was an offensive explosion on Sunday as No. 19 Ole Miss (27-15, 10-8 SEC) fell to No. 4 South Carolina (31-10, 10-8 SEC) by a score of 11-9.

The two teams combined for 25 hits, including eight home runs, as South Carolina avoided the sweep with the win. The Gamecocks blasted five home runs in the game while the Rebels notched three round-trippers on the day. Ole Miss out hit South Carolina 16-to-9 but it wasn’t enough to complete the rally.

Cody Satterwhite (3-1) suffered the loss in relief as he saw his team tie the game in the seventh, only to give up a run each in the eighth and the ninth. He allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Starter Nathan Baker worked 1.0 inning as he allowed six runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. The Gamecocks notched three home runs on the freshman to push out to an early 5-0 lead before Justin Cryer entered in relief. Cryer then turned in a career outing as he struck out 10 batters in a career-long 5.2 innings.

Wynn Pelzer (2-2) notched the win in relief for the Gamecocks as he saw the Rebels rally to tie the game then saw his own squad reclaim the lead in the eighth. Pelzer entered the game in the third and worked 4.1 innings as he gave up three runs on five hits, including a home run from Evan Button.

Jeff Jeffords picked up his first save of the season as he worked the final 2.0 innings for the Gamecocks, holding the Rebels to one hit as he struck out two.

“We fought hard to battle back after giving up five runs in the first, but we just didn’t have enough production on the mound today,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “We were able to score some runs and swing the momentum in our favor but couldn’t get over the hump. I was proud of Justin Cryer today, but we gave up too many runs early.”

Jordan Henry and Logan Power led the Rebels at the plate with three hits each as every Rebel starter notched a hit in the game. Brett Basham, Evan Button and Kyle Mills all notched home runs on the afternoon to help power the Rebel offense. It was the first career home run for Basham while Button and Mills each collected their third.

South Carolina got on the board in the first when Travis Jones reached on a throwing error on a grounder to third and advanced to second on the play when the throw sailed wide at first. He then moved to third on a wild pitch before James Darnell drew a walk. Justin Smoak then doubled down the left field line to drive in both base runners and give South Carolina a 2-0 lead. Phil Disher then hit a home run to left field to push the lead to 4-0. Jon Willard then hit a solo home run to left field to give the Gamecocks the 5-0 lead.

Ole Miss answered with a run in the second when Logan Power came up with a two-out single to left field to score Jordan Henry from second. Henry opened the inning with a single before moving to second on a single up the middle from Cozart.

Reese Havens homered to open the second inning and push the lead to 6-1 as Ole Miss went to the bullpen to bring in Cryer. With two outs on the board, Smoak then hit a two-run shot to right, driving in James Darnell who reached on a walk and pushing the South Carolina lead to 8-1.

Basham homered to left field in the second inning to put a second run on the board for the Rebels. Justin Henry then doubled to left center before scoring on a double to left center from Cozart and cut the lead to 8-3.

Mills homered in the third inning, scoring Zach Miller who reached on an infield single a batter earlier to cut the lead to 8-5. C.J. Ketchum then singled before moving to second on a groundout from Basham. He scored a batter later on a single to left field from Jordan Henry to cut the lead to 8-6. South Carolina went to the bullpen as Pelzer came in to relieve Atwood.

Havens answered with a second home run in the fourth to put the Gamecocks back up 9-6.

Ole Miss cut the lead to one in the sixth inning as the Rebels pushed two more runs across to make it 9-8 in favor of the Gamecocks. Jordan Henry singled to open the inning before scoring on a triple down the right field line from Justin Henry. Overbeck then singled to left field to score Justin Henry before the Gamecocks would get out of the inning holding to the one run lead.

Button homered to right field to tie the game at nine in the seventh inning.

South Carolina mounted a rally in the eighth as Trent Kline came up with a double down the right field line to open the frame. Kline moved to third on a sac bunt from Willard before an RBI single from a pinch-hitting Drew Martin put the Gamecocks back on top 10-9.

The Rebels pressed South Carolina in the bottom half of the inning with runners at the corners and two outs, but couldn’t get the run across as the Gamecocks held the lead heading into the ninth.

South Carolina padded its lead in the ninth when Darnell scored on a throwing error off a grounder to third that allowed Smoak to reach and move to second while Darnell scored from second. The run gave the Gamecocks the 11-9 advantage. Satterwhite struck out the final two batters with the bases loaded to get the Rebels out of the inning.

Ole Miss couldn’t find another rally in the arsenal in the bottom half of the inning, as Jeffords closed out the frame and South Carolina avoided the sweep.

Ole Miss will return to action on Tuesday as the Rebels continue a seven-game homestand against Murray State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
