Ole Miss Women's Tennis Adds Another Dutch Player

OXFORD, Miss. Karen Nijssen of Heerhoguwaard, Holland has signed a national letter of intent to join the Ole Miss women’s tennis program, beginning in the 2007-08 academic year head coach Mark Beyers announced Thursday.

 

Nijssen is currently ranked No. 55 in singles and No. 16 in doubles in the women’s national rankings in Holland.  She recently defeated the No. 5 player in Holland, Linda Sentis. 

 

In 2006, Nijssen won the doubles title at the ITF tournament in held in her hometown.

 

“We are extremely excited about adding a second Dutch player to this year’s recruiting class,” Beyers said.  “Karen is a player whose results in the last 12 months have really improved significantly. Combined with her great work ethic I believe she will make a very big impact on this program. Also, Karen is a very accomplished doubles player which will help this team tremendously.”

 

Nijssen becomes the third Dutch player to sign with the Lady Rebels.  In the early signing period, the Lady Rebels inked Laura van de Stroet of Waalre, Holland. 

Senior Ilona Somers hails from Putte, Holland and is currently ranked No. 40 in the nation.  The two-time All-SEC honoree will likely continue her season in the NCAA Singles Championships in May.  The selections for the NCAA individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 2.
