Charles Bailey Wins Crossing The Lines Award

4/5/2007 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss senior track and field athlete Charles Bailey was named the 2007 winner of the Crossing The Lines award at the National Student-Athlete banquet held Wednesday night.

The Crossing The Lines award honors an Ole Miss athlete that stretches beyond the traditional role of a student-athlete and excels in competition, the classroom and the community. This individual excels above and beyond academically; contributes unselfishly in the community; and truly serves as a role model to his/her fellow student-athletes and coaches. The winner is chosen by a committee of university leaders.

“Charles Bailey exemplifies the criteria for this award,” said Associate A.D. for External Operations Derek Horne. “He is a service-oriented person that truly believes in helping others.  He has been a major contributor to the track team. He also serves as a role model for his teammates and our athletics department. Charles has positioned himself to be successful in his chosen field of endeavor.”

A marketing communications major, Bailey frequently speaks to area high schools about leadership. He is also involved in the Associated Student Body at Ole Miss, having served as Assistant Director of Communications this past year.

“I am very proud of Charles,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “I think he is very deserving of this award and I am glad that the committee agreed. He is a real leader for our team both in how he competes on the track and how he handles himself off it.”

Bailey, a D'Iberville, Miss. native, is currently ranked No. 1 in the SEC and No. 3 in the nation is the long jump with a mark of 24-09.75. He is also ranked No. 3 in the SEC and No. 26 in the nation in the triple jump with a mark of 49-07.00.

In recognition of his achievement Coca-Cola will donated $500 to the athletics department’s general scholarship fund in Bailey’s name.
