Kirui Wins 10,000 Meters At SEC Outdoor Championships

5/11/2007 | Track and Field

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Sophomore Barnabas Kirui became the first Ole Miss Rebel to win the 10,000 meters at the SEC Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Friday night.

Kirui posted a time of 30:07.05 to win the event, hosted by the University of Alabama at the Sam H. Bailey Track. Kirui bested defending champion Peter Kosgei of Arkansas. Kosgei finished second overall with a time of 30:12.98.

“Barnabas is trying to pull a difficult triple,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “He ran the 10,000 meters tonight and will run the steeplechase on Saturday and the 5,000 meters on Sunday. He ran a very tactical race. He stayed with the pack for awhile and broke away at the right time.”

Kirui’s victory gave the Rebel men 10 team points. After three events the Rebels sit in sixth place with 11 team points.

Junior Francis Vital finished sixth in the women’s heptathlon with a total score of 4590. Vital’s sixth place finish earned the Lady Rebels three team points. She finished seventh at last year’s SEC Outdoor Championships.

After three events the Lady Rebels are in ninth place in the team standings with three team points.

Junior James Maloney recorded a toss of 182-07 to finish eighth in the men’s hammer throw. Maloney’s throw was just off his career-best mark of 184-09. He earned one team point for the Ole Miss men with his eighth place finish.
