Rebel Golfers Got Georgia On Their Mind

5/16/2007 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss men’s golf team has Georgia on its mind this week.  The squad is in Alpharetta, Ga., for the NCAA East Regional May 17-19 at the Golf Club of Georgia.

The Rebels, the No. 12 seed in the East Regional, are making their fifth postseason appearance and third under head coach Ernest Ross.  They made the tournament in 1984 under Ross’ first tenure with the program and finished 20th.  In 1985, the Rebels posted their best ever finish, taking fourth.  Ole Miss went again in 1999 and 2001.

The NCAA East Regional will be a 54-hole tournament with 18 holes of play Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals. The finals will be played May 30-June 2 at the Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.

The East Regional will be played on the 7,017 Par 72 Lakeside Course.  The Lakeside Course was honored in 1991 by Golf Digest as “Best New Private Course” in America and annually hosts The United States Collegiate Championship.

The field includes some of the top teams in the nation, but Ross says his team will be ready.

“Without a doubt, our regional is the toughest one of the three,” he said.  The first 11 seeds read like a who’s who in college golf.  Most of the teams have played this course at tournaments over the last couple years, so they may have an advantage over us.  But we have to start with some upsets somewhere, so we’ll just jump right in.”

That shouldn’t be a problem, as the Rebels beat then No. 1 Georgia and No. 9 Florida to finish fourth at the SEC Championships at Sea Island, Ga., in April.

Ole Miss is led by seniors Callum Macaulay, Chris Rogers and Brice Bailey.  Junior David Marino and sophomore Will Roebuck round out the squad competing this weekend.

Macaulay, who earned All-SEC second team honors, has been on a whirlwind since finding out the Rebels were headed to postseason play. He finished up exams last week and then boarded a plane to Ireland to compete for a spot on the European Walker Cup team.

“I’ve waited four years for this, and I can’t wait to tee it up on Thursday,” Macaulay said.  “We played good in our last tournament against some very good teams, so hopefully we can duplicate that success and earn a trip to nationals.”

While none of the current Rebels have participated in the NCAA Championships, assistant coach Jonathan Dismuke competed in four NCAA Regionals and three NCAA Finals during his four-year career at Auburn.  He tied for third at the NCAA East Regional in 2004.

The Rebels will tee off Thursday at 11:35 a.m. CT from the 10th tee.  Fans can follow the Rebels during the regional by going to www.olemisssports.com and clicking on the live scoring link in the upcoming events box.
