Mary Jane Callahan Earns All-South Honors

5/17/2007 | Softball

STARKVILLE, Miss. Following a successful senior season and a stellar collegiate career, Ole Miss team captain Mary Jane Callahan was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-South Region second team, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Wednesday.

The pitcher/utility player from Muenster, Texas, is the second Rebel in school history to earn All-Region honors. DeDe Justice received second-team accolades as a designated player in 2003.

“I am very happy for Mary Jane,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “This is a nice reward for her after all the hard work she has put in. She has been a tremendous asset to the Ole Miss program as both a player and a person. We will miss her.”

A total of 248 players from 121 different teams comprise the first and second teams in the nine NFCA regions. Chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams.

Callahan finished her career as the all-time Ole Miss leader in wins, strikeouts, complete games, innings pitched, starts and appearances, while ranking second in earned run average and shutouts. As a hitter, she ranks in the top five in batting average, hits, RBI, runs, total bases, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.

This year the left-hander helped the Rebels to their second consecutive SEC Tournament appearance and a school-record 11 league wins, including victories over No. 1 Tennessee, No. 9 LSU and No. 19 Florida (twice) during the regular season. In the circle, she boasted a team-best 2.30 ERA to go with an 8-8 record and 92 strikeouts in 106.2 innings. At the plate, she ranked second on the squad with a .308 average and 23 RBI.

The Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America teams will be announced at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
