No. 13 Rebels Take Down Memphis 10-2

5/2/2007 | Baseball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. There was a decidedly Memphis flair to the ballgame on Wednesday, but it mostly came from the Rebels as No. 13 Ole Miss (31-16, 12-9 SEC) defeated the Tigers of Memphis (27-17) by a score of 10-2.

Zach Miller led the Rebels at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, including two RBI and two runs scored while Zack Cozart added three RBI on a 1-for-2 performance. His one hit was a home run. All told, three Memphis natives tallied six of the Rebels 10 RBI and seven runs scored on the night to help Ole Miss to the win over the Tigers. Cody Overbeck also added a home run for the Rebels.

Brett Bukvich (6-2) picked up the win as he worked 5.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Four other pitchers saw time on the mound as Jesse Simpson, Scott Bittle, Craig Rodriguez and Justin Cryer all worked an inning each and combined for four strikeouts and only three hits.

Brennan Martin (1-1) suffered the loss for the Tigers as he worked 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

“It was a good way to finish off the non-conference schedule,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “Zack Cozart is really starting to look like Zack Cozart. He had the big home run and the deep fly ball to get runs across. He’s terrific defensively and he makes the plays. Overbeck was also big with his home run on the heels of Cozart’s hit.”

The Rebels got on the board in the third when Cozart hit a two-run shot to drive in Justin Henry from second. Henry doubled with two outs before Cozart hit his home run. Cody Overbeck then homered in the next at bat to put the Rebels up 3-0.

Ole Miss continued to score in the fourth as Brett Basham drove in Zach Miller from third to put the Rebels out to a 4-0 lead.

Overbeck singled to open the fifth before a double from Logan Power pushed Overbeck to third and a fielding error by the centerfielder allowed him to score, giving the Rebels a 5-0 lead. A balk moved Power to third before a double down the left field line from Miller pushed Ole Miss out 6-0. Jordan Henry then singled to left field to score Miller and give the Rebels a 7-0 lead after the top of the fifth.

Memphis got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when K.K. Chalmers hit a sac fly to centerfield, scoring Josh Irvin from third. Irvin doubled to open the inning before moving to third on a wild pitch.

A sac fly from Power in the sixth pushed the Rebels back ahead by seven as Ole Miss took an 8-1 lead on the Tigers as Cozart scored and Overbeck moved to second. Miller singled to left field in the next at bat to drive in Overbeck and put Ole Miss up 9-1.

A Cozart sac fly in the seventh put Ole Miss up 10-1 as Jordan Henry scored from third. Henry singled through the right side before moving to third on a single from Cullan Kight.

Memphis scored a second run with a double to left from Chalmers in the ninth, but the Tigers could get no closer as Ole Miss picked up the win.

Ole Miss will continue to play on the road when the Rebels return to action this weekend against the Tennessee Volunteers. First-pitch in Friday’s series opener against the Diamond Vols is set for 6 p.m. The game will be televised by Comcast Sports.
