Rebels' Bukvich Named SEC Pitcher Of The Week

5/21/2007 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss sophomore left-hander Brett Bukvich has been named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week following a shutout of ninth-ranked Arkansas the league office announced on Monday.

Bukvich pitched 7.0 scoreless innings in a combined shutout of the ninth-ranked Razorbacks to complete a series-win in the regular season finale for the Rebels. Ole Miss claimed a 5-0 win over Arkansas on the road for the fourth-straight series win over Arkansas.

It marked the third win over the Razorbacks this season as Ole Miss defeated Arkansas 5-4 in the Dairy Queen Classic in Minneapolis on March 2 before taking two-of-three in the weekend series.

Bukvich, who held a no-hitter through four innings, allowed only two hits while holding the Razorbacks off the scoreboard during his time on the mound. He also stepped up in the clutch, pinning the Razorbacks down with a runner at third four times in preserving the shutout.

It marked the first SEC start for the sophomore since March 25 when he drew the starting nod against No. 25 Alabama. Since that time, Bukvich also picked up a win in relief over No. 17 Mississippi State in the series opener against the Bulldogs.

With the win, Bukvich improved to 7-2 on the season, leading the team in victories on the season.

Ole Miss will return to action in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 23. The fifth-seeded Rebels will take on the fourth-seeded Bulldogs of Mississippi State at 8 p.m. at Regions Park.
