Lady Rebel Netter Somers Set To Begin NCAA Individual Championships

5/22/2007 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss women’s tennis senior Ilona Somers is already an All-SEC honoree.  She would like to add All-America to her resume’ so she can hang her picture on the wall in the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.  Her quest to do that begins Wednesday with the start of the NCAA Singles Championships in Athens, Ga.

To accomplish her goal Somers must reach at least the round of 16, but she drew a tough opening assignment.  Ranked No. 37 in the nation, Somers will face Georgia Rose (9-16 seed) of Northwestern in the first round at 8 a.m. CT at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

While Somers earned All-SEC honors for the second year in a row, Rose was named the ITA Co-National Player to Watch on Tuesday.  Rose is ranked No. 13 in the nation and led her team to the “Sweet Sixteen.”

“I am excited about competing in the NCAA Championships,” Somers said. “I would be nice if I could advance far enough to earn All-America honors and put my picture on the wall in the tennis center. That would be a great way to go out.”
