Somers' Season Ends In NCAA First Round

5/23/2007 | Women's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. -- Ole Miss women’s tennis senior Ilona Somers saw her season come to an end Wednesday morning in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships.  Somers lost a straight set match to Georgia Rose (9-16 seed) of Northwestern, 6-1, 6-2 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Rose, ranked No. 13 in the nation, was named the ITA National Player to Watch this week and helped lead her team to the NCAA round of 16.

“Ilona played a very good player,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “It was obvious why she is seeded.  She served great and never gave Ilona anything free.  She wasn’t missing anything.  Ilona had some opportunities in the second set, which would have made it closer.”

With the loss, Somers concludes her career at Ole Miss.  She ascended to a top-40 ranking this season while playing No. 1 singles, and earned All-SEC honors for the second year in a row.  During her career, Somers helped lead the Lady Rebels to the SEC Western Division title in 2005 as well as the NCAA Championships.  This was her first appearance in the NCAA Singles Championships.
