Rebels Hold On To Defeat Tennessee 7-6

OXFORD, Miss. -- It was another one run game on Sunday, but the Rebels stepped up to the challenge and come out on the winning side as No. 13 Ole Miss (32-18, 13-11 SEC) put down a bases loaded rally in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Tennessee (27-20, 10-12 SEC) by a score of 7-6.
With the win, the Rebels avoided the sweep in the weekend series.
Freshman southpaw Nathan Baker (6-1) picked up the win to remain undefeated in SEC starts this year as he worked 5.1 innings with three runs on seven hits as he walked four and struck out two. Cody Satterwhite picked up his third save of the year as he worked 2.1 innings with two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. He entered the game with the tying run on deck.
Sophomore Scott Bittle worked 1.1 innings in middle relief, squelching a
Lance McClain (5-5) suffered the loss for the Vols as he worked 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with a walk and no strikeouts.
Logan Power drove in three RBI on the day as he went 1-for-3 at the plate but also notched a sac fly. Cody Overbeck led the Rebels at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance as he scored three runs.
It marked the first time this season the Rebels have been outscored in an SEC series this season as
“I am really proud of the team for hanging in there and battling today,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “We lacked the big inning today, but we got opportunities to push runs across and we took advantage of them. We needed every one of them today. I’m really proud of the way the pitcher’s battled today, especially for Scott Bittle to do what he did in the sixth.”
Ole Miss got on the board in the second inning when Cody Overbeck scored from third on a groundout to third from Power. Overbeck doubled to right center before moving to third on a sac bunt from Zach Miller.
The Rebels loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth before Ole Miss pushed a run across on a sac fly to left field from Power that scored Cozart and moved Overbeck and Miller to first and third. Fuller Smith then pinch hit and notched a sac fly to left to score Overbeck and give the Rebels a 3-0 lead.
J.P. Arencibia put Tennessee on the board in the bottom half of the inning, hitting a solo shot to left field on an 0-2 pitch with two outs on the board.
The Vols opened the fifth inning with a single up the middle from Frazier and a bunt single down the third base line by Julio Borbon to put runners at first and second. A sac bunt to third from Tony Delmonico moved both runners to scoring position. A groundout to third from Yan Gomes pushed Frazier across the plate and cut the lead to 3-2 in favor of the Rebels. Borbon then stole third and Arencibia walked to put runners at the corners before Baker got the designated hitter to groundout to first and end the inning with Ole Miss still in the lead.
Ole Miss moved out to a two run lead in the top of the sixth when Power drove in Overbeck on a rolling grounder to third. Overbeck singled to open the inning before stealing second and moving to third on a passed ball.
Bittle got Frazier to strike out for the second out of the inning as the top of the order came to the plate with Borbon. The sophomore right-hander then got Borbon to ground out to first and end the inning with Ole Miss holding the 4-3 lead.
The Rebels added to the lead in the seventh as Ole Miss pushed three more runs across. Basham opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a single from Jordan Henry. A chop single up the middle and a fielding error by the shortstop allowed Basham to score and the Henry brothers to move to second and third. A groundout to short from Cozart scored
The Vols cut back into the lead in the bottom half of the frame as Arencibia scored on a two-out double up the middle from Simunic to trim the lead to 7-4 in favor of the Rebels.
Ole Miss will return to action next weekend when the Rebels close out the home portion of the regular season against the Kentucky Wildcats. The final home series of the season will begin on Friday with first pitch set for
