Rebel Volleyball Lends Help To New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Ole Miss volleyball team took time out of a spring tournament recently to give back to the city of New Orleans.

The Rebels worked to beautify the area for locals to enjoy as the city gets back on its feet in the wake of the disaster as the team landscaped the park entrance to make it more attractive for people entering the area looking for rest and relaxation.

Rising senior Katie Kramer, a New Orleans native, was one of the Rebels to help rebuild New Orleans City Park, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. All materials for the community service project were donated by the Kramer family.

"It was really good for my teammates to experience something like this project," Kramer said. "We toured the city before we got to work. A lot of them wanted to know why we couldn't just go out and build a house or something. Once we got to work on the garden, though, and people kept stopping to thank us for helping add some beauty back to part of the city, I think they really understood what we were doing."

"This was a very worthwhile endeavor that really shows the character of this team," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "That they would take time out of their weekend and give of themselves says a lot about the type of people we have competing for and representing Ole Miss.

"The athletes definitely got something out of the experience. People passing by were very thankful for our efforts and the athletes realized what volunteering in the community can do and what an uplifting experience it can be as an individual to give back to a community."
