NCAA Oxford Regional: Southern Miss 14, Troy 1

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) Luke Adkins and Brian Dozier homered Friday as Southern Mississippi pounded 16 hits to defeat Troy 14-1 in the opening game of the Oxford Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

Adkins had a two-run homer in the first inning as the No. 2 seed Golden Eagles (39-21) raced to a 9-0 lead in the opening two innings. Dozier added a solo homer in the fourth inning as Southern Miss took advantage of five costly errors by Troy (34-26).

Ryan Belanger (8-4) picked up the win, scattering eight hits and striking out four in seven solid innings. Clegg Snipes (6-6), the first of five Troy pitchers, took the loss.

Jody Blount and Dozier had three hits and drove in three runs apiece for Southern Miss. Bo Davis and Michael Ewing added three hits each for the Golden Eagles, who face the Mississippi-Sam Houston State winner in the winners bracket final Saturday.

Clint Robertson and Trevor Tyre had two hits each for the Trojans, who scored their lone run on a sacrifice fly by Beau Brooks. Troy finished with 10 hits, but stranded 10 base runners.
