Ole Miss Softball Inks Signee Rachel Torres

6/21/2007 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. Head coach Missy Dickerson announced the signing of Texas native Rachel Torres to a national letter-of-intent Thursday, as she will join the Ole Miss softball team for the 2007-08 academic year.

Torres, who hails from Corpus Christi, Texas, becomes the fourth Rebel signee in this year’s incoming freshman class, joining Morgan Button (St. Louis, Mo.), Molly Goza (Plano, Texas) and Lindsey Perry (Madison, Miss.).

An all-around athlete, Torres could see playing time at catcher, infield or outfield. As a senior at Carroll High School, she was named the first team All-District 27-5A catcher as well as first team All-Metro catcher and first team All-South Texas by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. She batted .414 with six doubles, three home runs, 16 runs and 26 RBI.

“My staff and I are excited to have Rachel joining our team,” Dickerson said. “Her attitude and leadership potential, along with her athletic abilities, will make her a great fit for our program. Her softball development over the past few years has been dramatic. She runs well and has some pop in her bat. She is just a pure athlete with a great work ethic, and she is also an excellent student. She will be a valuable asset to our team.”

The incoming class will try to help the Rebels build on a 2007 campaign that saw the team win a school-record number of Southeastern Conference games and upset No. 1 Tennessee, No. 9 LSU and No. 19 Florida during the regular season.
