Rebel Golfer Kyle Ellis To Compete In Prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur

6/5/2007 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss men’s golfer Kyle Ellis will begin competing in the 54th-annual prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown, Pa., Thursday. The 72-hole stroke play event runs through Sunday and includes 40 collegiate players.

Ellis redshirted this past season for the Rebels and will play his final season in 2007-08.  He is the defending Mississippi Amateur Champion, but is skipping that event this week to compete in the Sunnehanna.

“I hate that I have to miss (the State Am),” Ellis said. “But the schedules conflicted and I wanted to play in these national tournaments because I think they’ll help me prepare for next year and beyond.”

Without Ellis, the Rebels advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2001 and finished fourth at the SEC Tournament, their best showing since 1988.

While not playing any collegiate golf this year, Ellis has had some success on the national amateur circuit, finishing third at 9-under-par in the Azalea Invitational in Charleston, S.C., in early April.

The Sunnehanna Amateur was inaugurated in July of 1954 -- it was the first country club sponsored 72-hole stroke play competition for amateurs in the United States.
