Rebels Scrimmage Again Wednesday Afternoon
8/15/2007 | Football
Wednesday’s scrimmage featured special teams, with head coach Ed Orgeron describing it as huge.
“Our kickoff return team looked excellent,” he said. “We’ve made some strides in our kickoff team, but we still have a ways to go. Joshua (Shene) had a good day. Justin Sparks punted the ball well. He was very consistent and had some good punts.”
Concerning the return game Orgeron said, “Mike Wallace and Dexter McCluster had a good day as well as Marshay Green. Those three guys continue to look good back there.”
The first two groups went about 48 plays before ending with a goal line scrimmage.
“The offense took the ball down the field the first series and scored,” Orgeron said. “In the second half, the defense came alive and started getting some sacks and some pressure. It was an up and down scrimmage, very competitive on both sides.”
Nothing changed in the quarterback situation as all three saw action and did some things well, according to Orgeron.
“Seth worked with the first group. Mike (Herrick) had some good throws and Brent (Schaeffer) had a couple of good throws. Brent threw a pass down the field that was pretty good. Not much has changed. It’s just back and forth every day.”
Coach Orgeron talked about how exciting it is to have competition at a lot of positions, including running back, where sophomore Cordera Eason saw plenty of action in the second scrimmage.
“Cordera had a great scrimmage,” Orgeron said. With Bruce not scrimmaging, Cordera worked with the ones and had an outstanding scrimmage. We like the competition. It makes it exciting.”
Orgeron announced that Nate Banks, Brandon Jenkins and Antonio Turner practiced with the team on Wednesday, but are still waiting final grades from intersession. He also announced that Mico McSwain is not going to make it.
“There comes a point when you have to do it, you have to fish or cut bait,” Orgeron said. “We laid out everything that we possibly could, and he didn’t get it done. I hope he finds his way on some NAIA or Division II team.”
The Rebels will continue with two-a-days Thursday with two practices, in preparation for the season-opener against
Fans will have their opportunity to greet the team and pick up autographs on Aug. 18 at Meet the Rebels Day in the Indoor Practice Facility. Posters and other Rebel merchandise will also be available, while coaches address the crowd.
