Rebels Go Full Pads Under Hot Sun Thursday
8/23/2007 | Football
With temperatures still hovering around 100 degrees, the Rebels had a solid day of practice, according to head coach Ed Orgeron.
The team finished the day working on goal-line and short-yardage drills, and as has been the case throughout the fall, the running game again showed it is an area of strength for the Rebels.
“We really worked hard at the end of practice today,” Orgeron said. “We finished hard. There was good competition. The offense ran the ball really well again today.”
Orgeron also noted the development of the linebackers, as Ole Miss will have to replace all three starters from a year ago, including two-time All-America middle linebacker Patrick Willis.
“I thought Chris Strong had an excellent practice today,” Orgeron said. “Jonathan Cornell came back. Those guys were looking really good out there. I think we have to look at what’s going on and see where we’re at. As we start getting into game-planning, we will have to see what we need to do and maybe make a couple of adjustments.”
One of the standouts of the linebacking corps in the past few days has been junior transfer Ashlee Palmer.
“He’s playing with some confidence,” Orgeron said. “He’s in there studying, protecting the red jersey. He wants to be a starter and he’s really playing like one. I think he’s well on his way.”
Ole Miss will be back on the practice field Friday before a short “mock game” scrimmage on Saturday afternoon as the Rebels gear up for game week number one Monday.
