Rebels Work Indoors, Get Help on Defensive Line

8/29/2007 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. With stormy conditions in Oxford, the Ole Miss Rebels moved indoors for their afternoon football practice Wednesday as they ready for the season opener in three days.

Head coach Ed Orgeron was pleased with his squad’s energy as they worked inside the Indoor Practice Facility for three hours.

“I thought the guys were really spirited,” he said. “You can tell a difference in them. We still have a couple corrections left to go and a couple gameplans left on Thursday. For the most part, I think everybody’s in pretty good spirits.”

The Rebels received some good news earlier in the day, as freshman defensive lineman Ted Laurent was certified eligible by the NCAA. The 6-foot-2, 285-pounder from Powder Springs, Ga., participated in the first two weeks of preseason drills and returns to the practice field on Thursday.

“He is big and strong enough to play this year,” said Orgeron. “I think eventually he’ll be in the mix somehow. I’m happy for him to be back with the team.”

Laurent joins a young Rebel line, which has key veterans in seniors Jeremy Garrett and Brandon Jenkins. In the interior, Garrett returned to practice over the weekend and is working his way back into game shape.

“He has a lot of work to do,” Orgeron said. “He’s a little sore and a little tired. We’re going to have a rotation in there, but he is probably our best technician up front, as far understanding how to play the nose tackle position.”

On the ends, Orgeron praised the play this preseason of Marcus Tillman and Greg Hardy, both of whom earned First Team Freshman All-America honors last fall.

“Marcus has not missed a snap all camp and is really coming along,” said Orgeron. “He’s a great young man, and I think he’s ready for a good year.

“Greg can be dominant at times.”

Ole Miss will hold practice Thursday and travel to Memphis Friday. Kickoff of the 2007 campaign is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. It will mark the fourth straight year the Rebels and Tigers have faced in the opener, with Ole Miss winning the last two.
