Rebels Open First Day of Fall Practice

8/4/2007 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Rebel football team opened fall practice for the 2007 season on Saturday on the practice fields adjacent to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

The Rebels practiced in helmets only and head coach Ed Orgeron, who is entering his third season at Ole Miss, was pleased with the first day of camp.

“We had a pretty long, hard practice today,” said Orgeron. “I saw some good things. There were a few things that were rough around the edges, but it was good getting the guys back out there; having 105 out there and getting them accustom to our system.”

Sophomore defensive end Greg Hardy, who caught a TD pass last season vs. Mississippi State, found himself on the offensive side of the ball again today.

“Greg Hardy played some offense today,” Orgeron said. “He caught some really good balls out there. The offense wants him all the time and the defense wants him all the time, so I have to step in.”

Junior college transfer Tony Fein impressed Orgeron in his first practice.

“Tony Fein showed us some really good things in the middle. He is not where we need him to be, but we knew that coming in. I was really impressed with his intelligence, awareness and maturity.”

Orgeron was also pleased with a few of the Rebel freshman.

“I was really, really impressed with our young defensive lineman, Ted Laurent, Lawon Scott and Justin Sanders. I think that they are a really good group of guys. Johnny Brown did some really good things at safety. He showed good athletic ability out there.”

Orgeron also noted that senior Seth Adams gained the upper hand on the quarterback race on the first day of practice.

“Seth (Adams) had the best day today. He completed some passes and made really good decisions. Brent (Schaeffer) threw some passes. I will have to watch the film.”

Depth, which was a problem for Ole Miss last season, is a bright spot for the Rebels as the begin fall camp.

“It gives guys more opportunities,” Orgeron said. “In the past we went ones vs. ones and twos vs. twos, but now we have to go threes vs. threes and some fours vs. fours. It gives the guys an opportunity to rest, but it also provides little room for not getting the job done because the guy behind you is ready.”

Ole Miss opens the 2007 season with a 2:30 p.m. Sept. 1 contest at Memphis, which will be televised regionally by CSS.
