Rebels Continue Fall Camp On Day Two

8/5/2007 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Rebel football team continued fall drills on Sunday on the practice fields adjacent to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The Rebels practiced in helmets only for the final day, as they will dress out in shoulder pads beginning Monday.

“The practice was a lot crisper this afternoon,” said head coach Ed Orgeron. “We had a lot less repeats this afternoon. Guys were zipping around and we had better execution. I don’t think the offense turned over the ball as many times as they did yesterday. Yesterday there was a lot of wasted energy. Now camp has settled down and we are getting into a routine.”

Orgeron was impressed with the play of redshirt freshman Reggie Hicks, who helped the Rebels in a couple of different positions.

“Reggie Hicks played some tailback today. He had some nice runs. He also played some at tight end, because we had some tight ends go down with cramps. So he is a guy who really showed up. He is a utility guy who can play back and forth.”

Sophomore Jonathan Cornell impressed on day two, as the Rebels rebuild their linebacker corps.

“Jonathan Cornell really showed up today,” Orgeron said. “He has showed that he is probably our best linebacker.”

Orgeron also noted the play of redshirt freshman quarterback Michael Herrick.

“Michael Herrick had a good day today. He played some reps with the first team. He was efficient and did some good things. The (quarterback) race is right where we want it to be. It is very competitive.”

Junior college transfer Mark Jean-Louis provides depth for the Rebels’ offensive line unit.

“Mark Jean-Louis is a guy who must have lost 27 or 28 pounds. He is a guy who can provide depth for us. He is doing a good job.”

The Rebels will continue fall drills Monday when they practice in helmets and shoulder pads.

Ole Miss opens the 2007 season with a 2:30 p.m. Sept. 1 contest at Memphis, which will be televised regionally by CSS.
