Senior Kyle Ellis Highlights Rebels At Scenic City Invitational

9/11/2007 | Men's Golf

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. Except for the second round of the tournament, the Ole Miss men’s golf team played pretty well at the Scenic City Invitational, but it was that second round that left them in a tie for sixth at the end of Tuesday’s final round.

Senior Kyle Ellis led the Rebels, finishing in a tie for 17th with a 73-72-69214.  The Senatobia native recorded his 15th career top-20 finish.

The Rebels fired a 281 in the first round on Monday, but then shot as head coach Ernest Ross put it, “an uncharacteristically bad round” in the second 18 to drop down to a tie for 10th heading into the final 18.   Tuesday, the team rebounded to post a 284, which included playing the back-nine in a driving rainstorm.

“I am proud of the comeback today,” Ross said.  “We might have played even better, but we got in a hard rainstorm on the back nine. We shot ourselves in the foot with a terrible second round.  We will come back and go to work on correcting our mistakes.”

Fellow senior David Marino started off the tournament great, with a 68. He posted a 76 in the second round and concluded with a 72 to finish at 216.

Making his debut for the Rebels, freshman and Brandon native Jonathan Randolph shot 71-77-72220.  Also playing for the first time as a Rebel, Chris Mullhaupt turned in a 73-77-71221.    After shooting an opening-round 69, transfer Jesse Speirs posted rounds of 75, 81 for a total of 225.

The Rebels return to the links Sept. 24-25 at the Shoal Creek Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
