Ole Miss Women's Tennis To Host Tournament

OXFORD, Miss. With football away this weekend, fans can come out to the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center and watch some of the top players in the nation compete at the fifth annual Ole Miss Fall Classic, hosted by the Lady Rebels, Sept. 14-16.  Admission is free.

 

Play begins Friday at 8 a.m., with doubles.  Saturday’s action also begins at 8 a.m.  Sunday’s finals will start at 9:30 a.m., with doubles, followed by the singles at 11 a.m.  The tournament will include four flights of singles and two flights of doubles. 

 

The field includes SEC teams Georgia and Mississippi State as well as Arkansas State, Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis, South Alabama, Southern Illinois, Southern Mississippi and Troy.

 

“We are looking forward to hosting the Fall Classic,” said assistant coach and tournament director, Whitt Taber.  “It has become one of the most popular tournaments in the country for the teams to play, and we are proud to showcase our beautiful Palmer-Salloum Tennis Center. We want to encourage all Rebel fans to come out and witness some of the best college tennis in the country--for free.”

 

The Lady Rebels will have six players competing in the field led by returnees Nika Koukhartchouk, Soledad Podlipnik and Preethi Subramanian.  Mimi Renaudin, who missed all of last season after having surgery on her wrist, will be in competition for the first time since the 2006 spring season.

 

Making their debuts, will be Dutch native Laura Van de Stroet and Russian Yana Kireeva.  van de Stroet had a career high ranking of No. 4 in Under-16s in Holland.  She finished third in the National Outdoor Championships for Under-16 and fourth in the National Indoor Championships.   Kireeva was been ranked as high as No. 140 in the ITF World Junior Rankings.  In the last year, she has defeated five players ranked in the top 100 in the ITF World Junior Rankings.

 

The top two players in the tournament are No. 22 Monika Dancevic of Georgia, and No. 29 Martina Banikova of Misssisippi State.
