Women's Basketball Relief Project A Success

9/17/2007 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team recently returned from the Mississippi Gulf Coast following a successful weekend that saw the Lady Rebels help a community still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

Ole Miss began the weekend Friday evening at 7 p.m. by opening the doors to Long Beach Middle School for a free basketball clinic open to all elementary children grades 1-6. Hosted by Long Beach Middle School, the clinic consisted of basketball skill drills, autographs, pictures and an opportunity to meet the players.

The Rebels continued their weekend Saturday morning with a community service relief project with the elderly citizens of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The players and coaching staff visited Gulfport and painted a picket fence and hung sheet rock at the home of an elderly couple. In addition, the team next traveled to Long Beach and helped with the recovery inside the Long Beach Public Library. Inside the library, the team shelved books, broke down boxes, transported books and set up computers in preparation for reopening on Sept. 24 at 9 a.m.
