Ole Miss Takes Doubles Title At Baylor Invitational

WACO, Texas Ole Miss’ Erling Tveit and Jonas Berg, playing together for the first time, teamed up to win the doubles title at the H.E.B. Baylor Invitational Sunday, to conclude a successful opening weekend for the Rebel netters.

 

Tveit and Berg, ranked No. 20 in the nation, and seeded No. 2 in the tournament, downed the No. 4 seeds, Ralph Knupfer and Christoph Mueller of Rice, 8-3 in the final.  Tveit and Berg won five matches this past weekend, and the closest one came in the quarterfinals, an 8-6 win.  

 

The Rebels had half of the final eight in the top draw of singles, and one other doubles team reach the semifinals.  In singles, Robbye Poole advanced to the semis but had to retire down 5-2 in the first set to Texas’ Kellen Damico, due to illness.

 

Bram ten Berge, who had not played since last fall after redshirting the 2007 season, played well in reaching the final eight.  In the second round, he posted a win over Texas’ No. 1 player, who is ranked No. 23 in the country.  

 

Senior Matthias Wellermann looked solid in his first competitive action since the NCAA Team Championships last year.  Wellermann did not play this summer while recovering from back problems that plagued him during last season.

 

ten Berge and Wellermann teamed up in doubles to post a big win over the nation’s No. 4 ranked team from Texas on their way to the semifinals. 

 

The Rebels will be back in action at the year’s first major national championship event, the ITA Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Sept. 29-Oct. 7.
