9/24/2007 | Men's Golf

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Senior Ole Miss golfer David Marino shot a 1-under 73-70143 and sits in a tie for third after two rounds of the Shoal Creek Invitational Monday at the Shoal Creek Country Club.          Joining Marino in the top 10 is junior Jesse Speirs, who shot two rounds of even par and is tied for eighth.

Marino is just two strokes back of North Florida’s Chris Kennedy, who finished the first day at 141. Speirs trails by three.  The Rebels are in fifth as a team with a 297-293590.

Senior Kyle Ellis shot 74-76150, junior Will Roebuck carded a 78-77155, and freshman Jonathan Randolph posted an 80-75155 to round out the Rebel scoring.

“We did not play well today, but we hung in there and played tough toward the end,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  We kept ourselves in a position to hopefully make a move tomorrow.  We need to play the par fives well on this course, and we just did not take advantage of them today.  We are very pleased that David Marino and Jesse Speirs are out front leading our team.”

Texas Tech leads the field with a 578.  UAB is in second with a 583.  Ole Miss trails third place Auburn by five strokes.   LSU (t8th) and Vanderbilt (12th) are the other SEC teams in the 12-team field.
