NCAA Upholds Decisions Regarding Jerrell Powe
9/6/2007 | Football
OXFORD, Miss. -- The University of Mississippi announced Thursday that its appeal of two different NCAA decisions concerning the eligibility of Jerrell Powe has been denied. According to a release issued Thursday by the NCAA, "two separate NCAA committees -- the NCAA Student Records Review Committee and the NCAA Initial Eligibility Waiver Learning Disability Subcommittee, comprised of representatives from NCAA member schools and high school educators from across the country -- today upheld the NCAA staff decisions regarding Jerrell Powe." The release further noted that "as a result of these appeals decisions, Mr. Powe will be allowed to receive athletically related financial aid to attend classes at the University of Mississippi. However, he will be ineligible for practice and football competition until meeting NCAA and institutional academic requirements in college. The earliest Mr. Powe could participate is fall 2008." "We are disappointed in the decision reached by the NCAA Students Records Review Committee and the NCAA Initial Eligibility Waiver Learning Disability Subcommittee," said Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone. "The NCAA Student Records Review Committee decision is final, with no appeal opportunity," Boone added. "The NCAA Initial Eligibility Waiver Learning Disability Subcommittee's decision is appealable to the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet, and we will do so." Mr. Powe is enrolled at Ole Miss and receiving financial aid. Unless the decision of the NCAA Initial Eligibility Waiver Learning Disability Subcommittee is overturned, he will not be able to practice or compete this year. "Jerrell is a part of the Ole Miss family," said Rebel Head Coach Ed Orgeron. "One day he will reach his dream of playing for the Ole Miss football team."
