Alvey Promoted To Associate Head Coach With Rebel Volleyball

1/10/2008 | Volleyball

OXFORD Ole Miss has promoted Molly Alvey to the position of Associate Head Coach with the Rebel volleyball program, Athletics Director Pete Boone announced on Thursday.

Alvey, who just completed her third season with the Rebels, has been an integral part of Ole Miss’ success the past two seasons. The former setter has helped guide the Rebels to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and two of the best seasons in program history.

Ole Miss posted its first winning record in 2006 and tied the school record for SEC wins, before shattering both marks this past season. The Rebels went 14-6 in SEC play in 2007 and notched a 25-8 record overall with a third place finish in the SEC.

“Molly is an exceptional coach and recruiter,” said Lynnette Johnson, Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator. “She has had a huge impact in the success of our program the last two years.”

Alvey, who works with the setters after playing setter herself at Centre College, helped develop junior Rachel Kieckhaefer into an All-SEC Second Team selection this season. The Rebels also saw the program’s first All-Freshman team selection as outside hitter Jackie Jones was named to the team by the league’s coaches.

After starting her coaching career at Temple University as a graduate assistant in 2001, Alvey worked her way up the ranks, taking the head coaching job at the University of Southern Indiana in 2004 before landing at Ole Miss in the spring of 2005.

During her single season at Southern Indiana, Alvey took the Screaming Eagles to excellence and set an example for what she expects out of a volleyball team.

The 2004 squad finished the regular season 24-7 claiming the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season tournament with a 15-1 conference record. After claiming the regular season title, Southern Indiana then stormed through the conference tournament to earn the program's second-ever NCAA Division II Tournament berth, advancing to the Sweet 16.

In her time at USI, Alvey coached two All-Region selections and the program's second All-America selection in Laura Ellerbusch.

During her three years as a graduate assistant coach at Temple, Alvey was part of a program that posted an overall record of 72-25 (.742), claimed an Atlantic 10 Championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2002 before falling to the Southeastern Conference's Florida Lady Gators.

The Owls finished as A-10 Conference Runners-Up in 2001 and 2003.

Alvey was also a part of a coaching staff that coached A-10 Player of the Year Xu Yun in 2002, and two-time A-10 Setter of the Year Allison Runk in 2002 and 2003. The Temple coaching staff also produced eight All-Conference first team selections in those three seasons.
