1/16/2008 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss was voted to win the Southeastern Conference, as announced Wednesday in the SEC Men’s Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll.  The Rebels were also a consensus pick to claim their seventh consecutive SEC Western Division title.

The Rebels, ranked No. 5 in the nation in the preseason ITA national rankings, received six first place votes for the overall SEC Championship, while Georgia got four and Tennessee one.

Ole Miss won its sixth straight SEC West title in 2007, finished runner-up to NCAA Champion Georgia, and advanced to the NCAA “Sweet Sixteen.”

With six of the top seven returning from last year, the Rebels are seeking their fifth overall championship to go with a pair of titles in 2004 and 2005.

Behind the Rebels’ consensus 66 votes on the Western Division side, LSU was picked for the No. 2 spot, followed by Alabama in third, Auburn in fourth, Mississippi State in fifth and Arkansas in sixth.

Georgia was picked to win the Eastern Division with 64 votes, followed by Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

The preseason poll is voted on by the SEC Men’s Tennis Coaches and is based on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 count. The complete tally for the poll is below.
