Getzin, Rebels Reach Agreement On Contract Extension

1/24/2008 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss.   Following one of the best seasons in program history that included a second-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and the program’s best record ever in Southeastern Conference play, the Rebels and head volleyball coach Joe Getzin have agreed to a four-year contract extension Ole Miss announced on Thursday.

The extension comes on the heels of a 25-9 season as the Rebels finished third in the SEC overall standings at 14-6 and second in the SEC Western Division. The performance earned Ole Miss its second-straight NCAA Tournament berth as the Rebels traveled to the West Coast to face BYU in the opening round of the tournament.

Getzin was named Southeastern Conference Co-Coach of the Year, earning Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season.

“I’m really pleased to continue the partnership we have here at Ole Miss,” Getzin said. “The administration’s belief in how we have been able to build the program and have the success we’ve had is rewarding for me personally as a coach. I am looking forward to continued success here at Ole Miss. We’ve set some goals and we are looking forward to bringing an SEC Championship to Oxford.”

“Joe has worked really hard with our student-athletes to put Ole Miss volleyball on the national map,” said Lynnette Johnson, Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator. “We are only going to get better with Joe Getzin and his staff (Molly Alvey and Anastasia Porter).”

The Rebels opened the 2007 season strong, posting nine-straight victories for the best start in school history. Ole Miss also claimed the Magnolia Invitational and the Akron Sheraton Invitational before posting a second-place finish at the SMU Radisson Invitational in the first three weeks of the season.

In the opening weekend of competition, the Rebels defeated then No. 20 ranked Missouri in the first match of the season on the way to the Magnolia Invitational title. The Rebels also defeated traditional power Sacramento State a week later on the way to an 11-1 record in non-conference play.

The Rebels didn’t let up in SEC action, as Ole Miss posted sweeps of Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee and South Carolina on the way to the program’s 14-6 conference record. The sweep of Tennessee was the first-ever for the Rebels and included the program’s first-ever win over the Lady Vols in Oxford, while the Rebels also swept Alabama, Kentucky and South Carolina for the first time in a decade.

Ole Miss also saw players garner All-SEC honors for the second-straight season as junior setter Rachel Kieckhaefer was named All-SEC second team and outside hitter Jackie Jones was named to the All-Freshman team. Jones is the first All-Freshman selection for the Rebels.
