Ole Miss Women's Tennis Falls To Tulsa 5-2

1/25/2008 | Women's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. The Ole Miss women’s tennis team got solid play from the top two spots in the lineup, but it was not enough as they dropped a 5-2 decision to 46th-ranked Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center Friday.

The Lady Rebels (1-1) will conclude the road trip against Oklahoma State Saturday at 10 a.m.

Senior Nika Koukhartchouk and freshman Karen Nijssen teamed up to post an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, but Ole Miss lost at No. 3 8-2, setting up the final match on court two.  Soledad Podlipnik and Preethi Subramanian played to a tiebreaker against Tulsa’s Thalia Diaz-Barriga. The Reb duo gained a 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker, but lost 9-8(5) as the Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Hurricanes mounted a 3-0 lead in the match with straight-set wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, but Ole Miss answered with victories by Koukhartchouk and Nijssen at the top.  Koukhartchouk downed Diaz-Barriga 6-2, 6-1 on court one and Nijssen topped Carla Zabaleta 6-3, 6-3 on court two.

That was it for the Lady Rebels, as the Hurricanes clinched the victory with a straight-set win at No. 6 singles and also won at No. 5 in a supertiebreaker.

“We need to learn capitalize on the opportunities we have, like in the doubles when we were up 3-0 in the breaker,” head coach Mark Beyers said.   “There were a couple of matches where we didn’t’ keep it close and we have to do that.  For us not to win anything at three, four five and six, can’t happen.  We have to put this past us and move on to Oklahoma State.  It’s another opportunity to get a ranked win.”

Oklahoma State is coming off a 4-0 win over Loyola Marymount in their first match of the season.
