Rebels Fall To Alabama 3-1 On Sunday
10/12/2008 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. Middle blockers Regina Thomas and Miranda Kitts both tallied double-digit kills and hit above .300 on the afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Ole Miss (8-8, 4-3 SEC) fell to Alabama (10-6, 3-4 SEC) on Sunday by a score of 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 16-25, 17-25).
Kitts and Thomas both notched 10 kills on the afternoon to lead the Rebels and combined for five blocks, while Allison Weber came up with a career-high 24 digs to lead four players in double digits defensively. Rachel Kieckhaefer tallied 15 digs, while Morgan Springer added 13 digs and Emily Kvitle came up with 11 digs.
The Rebels were unable to overcome 12 service errors in the loss.
"It's a very frustrating pattern and we have to play with more consistency," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "It's all in our mental approach. We have got to stay aggressive. Alabama was very aggressive with their attack and we didn't put away a lot of balls against a solid block.
"Allison Weber has been a bright spot with her defense. She is taking over a solid leadership role and is passing well. She's really developing into a good libero."
The first set was a tight battle between the two squads as the Rebels looked to the arm of Thomas and Caitlin Keefe who combined for seven kills and no errors in the set. Ole Miss lead early until Alabama tied the set at 13 before pushing out to a three point lead of its own. The Rebels closed the game and pushed ahead 24-22, but Alabama fought off two match-points as part of a four-point run to claim the first set 26-24.
The second set saw the Rebels fall behind early only to push ahead 15-12. Ole Miss never trailed again as the Rebels claimed the second set 25-20 to even the match. Ole Miss again went to Thomas and fellow middle blocker Kitts as the duo combined for seven kills and two blocks.
The third set was all Alabama as the Crimson Tide pulled out to an early five-point lead and never trailed as Ole Miss could not put together a run to get back into the set. Alabama picked up the third set win 25-16 as the Crimson Tide offense put down 19 kills and hit .429 for the set.
The fourth set was a tight back-and-forth contest until Alabama used a five-point run to break a 7-7 tie and move ahead of the Rebels for good. Ole Miss would cut the lead to two at12-10, but Alabama pushed the lead back out to nine at 23-15 before closing out the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth frame.
Ole Miss will return to the road next weekend with a pair of matches at Tennessee and No. 25 Kentucky. The Rebels will take on Tennessee at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Boling Arena on Friday night.
