Regina Thomas Named SEC Freshman Of The Week...Again

10/13/2008 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. For the second time middle blocker Regina Thomas garnered Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced on Monday.

Thomas hit .500 for the weekend with 26 kills and helped the Rebels maintain their hold on the Western Division lead after four weeks of conference play. She is one of three players in the SEC to earn the honor twice this season, and is the only player who is not a member of the ninth-ranked Florida Gators to earn the award this season.

This week Thomas was dominant as she played a key role in the Rebels picking up a 3-0 shut out over in-state rival Mississippi State and helped lead the Rebels against Alabama. Thomas hit .682 against the Bulldogs and posted a match-high 16 kills on 22 swings with only one attack error. She also came up with three blocks.

Against Alabama, Thomas again helped lead the team with 10 kills as she hit .346 and only committed one attack error on 26 swings.

Thomas was first named SEC Freshman of the Week on September 15 after helping lead the Rebels to the Magnolia Invitational Championship. She and sophomore middle blocker Miranda Kitts have both earned weekly honors from the Rebels this season as Kitts was named Defensive Player of the Week two weeks ago and is the only non-libero to earn the honor this season.

Ole Miss will return to action this weekend when the Rebels travel to take on Tennessee and No. 23 Kentucky.
