Rebel Freshmen Lead Golf Team To Third At Squire Creek

10/14/2008 | Men's Golf

RUSTON, La. Led by freshmen Joe David and Sean Dale, the Ole Miss men’s golf team shot the low round of the day, a 7-under 281, in the final round of the Squire Creek Invitational Tuesday.  The team couldn’t quite catch LSU and New Orleans, finishing third in the 16-team field with an 856.

David tied for second with an 8-under 208, just missing out on his first tournament title.  After opening with a 70, David fired back-to-back 69s to finish one back of Nevada’s Tyler Coffman. This marked David’s second top five finish of the year, as he also tied for fourth at the Shoal Creek Invitational.

Dale earned his second straight top 10 finish as he tied for sixth with a 6-under 210, just three off the lead.   He shot 71 and 72 on the first day and then tied for the second lowest round of the final day with a 67.  This comes on the heels of his second place showing at the Memphis Intercollegiate last week.

“Our guys knew we had to come out and play more aggressively, and we did,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “We played well with some tough pin placements, and got it under par.  We had some opportunities to win, but we’ll give credit to the other two teams for having strong finishes.   I am really proud of our two freshmen for having a good tournament.  We look forward to trying to make some slight improvements before our final tournament of the fall.”

Rounding out the Rebel scoring in the final round, junior Will Roebuck carded a 72, senior Stefan Strandlund had a 73 and Jesse Speirs turned in a 76, which did not count in the final tally.

The Rebels will conclude the fall Oct. 24-26 at the Bank of Tennessee at the Ridges.
