OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss women's tennis team is headed to Athens, Ga., this weekend for the ITA South Regional Championships to be played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The ITA South Regional will showcase players from 21 different schools around the South. A total of 14 players in the ITA Top 125 singles rankings are scheduled to play in the event along with four doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 50. There will be two flights, an "A" and a "B," which will have a 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles bracket.

Among those nationally ranked players scheduled to compete, is Rebel sophomore Karen Nijssen, ranked No. 73. She owns a 5-4 record and reached the finals of the Ole Miss Fall Classic in her last outing.

Freshman Kristi Boxx is off to an 11-1 start including reaching the finals of qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships as well as winning the Ole Miss Fall Classic.

The Rebels' other freshman, Gabriela Rangel, holds a 5-2 record and won the "B" Draw at the Ole Miss Fall Classic.

Also competing for the Rebels will be senior Mimi Renaudin, junior Soledad Podlipnik and sophomore Laura van de Stroet.

"This is a big opportunity for our players, head coach Mark Beyers said. "All the best players from around the South will be in the field. "We've had a little break since our last tournament, and it will be good to get back out there and compete."

The "A" flight singles and doubles winners along with the singles finalist will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships next month on the campus of Virginia in Charlottesville. The elite event, slated for Nov. 6-9, is the second collegiate grand slam event of the season. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country plus at-large selections will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.
