Ole Miss Doubles Team Into Semis At IT South Regional

10/24/2008 | Women's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. The Ole Miss women’s tennis team had a pretty good day at the ITA South Regional Championships Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, despite the rain and change of schedule.

With rain in the forecast, the schedule was altered and only doubles was played on Friday as all matches had to be moved indoors to the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor courts.  The Rebel tandem of sophomore Karen Nijssen and freshman Kristi Boxx won all three of their matches, only dropping five games total, to move into the semifinals of the “A” Doubles.

In the first round, Nijssen and Boxx, seeded 5-8, downed Natalia Guevara and Jessica Sweeting (USF) 8-2.  In the second round, the Reb duo shut out Jessica Wente/Bonny Davidson of Florida State, 8-0 to move into the quarterfinals, where they dominated the No. 2 seed, Alex Haney/Melissa Koning of Auburn, 8-3.

The semifinals will be played Sunday, and Nijssen and Boxx will face the third-seeded team of Alexander and Boonstra from Florida.

The Rebels’ other team of sophomore Soledad Podlipnik and freshman Gabriela Rangel dropped an 8-5 decision to Tiffany Welcher and Paulina Bigos (5-8) of Alabama.

Singles play begins Saturday and will include two rounds of play.
