10/7/2008 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. With football off this weekend, fans can come out to the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center and watch some of the top players in the nation compete at the sixth annual Ole Miss Fall Classic, hosted by the Lady Rebels, Oct. 10-12.  Admission is free.

Play begins Friday at 9 a.m., with doubles.  Saturday’s action also begins at 9 a.m.  Sunday’s finals will start at 9 a.m., with doubles, followed by the singles at 10:30 a.m.  The tournament will include four flights of singles and two flights of doubles.

The field includes SEC teams Arkansas and Mississippi State as well as Arkansas State, Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis, South Alabama, Tennessee-Chattanooga and defending Division II national champion Armstrong Atlantic State.

“We are looking forward to hosting the Ole Miss Fall Classic,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “It’s always fun to play at home, and we are excited to showcase our talents to the Ole Miss fans.  We have several newcomers this year, and one of them, Kristi (Boxx) is off to a great start.  Hopefully she can continue her success this weekend.  This will provide our team with another opportunity to see what we need to work on.”

One of the nation’s top players is Lady Rebel sophomore Karen Nijssen, who is ranked No. 73 in singles.  She earned All-SEC honors last year and participated in the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Nijssen will team up with freshman sensation Kristi Boxx, a native of Grenada, Miss., in doubles.  Boxx heads into the weekend with an 8-1 singles record, including a 5-1 mark at the Riviera All-American Championships, where she just missed out on advancing to the main draw.  In the qualifying tournament, she beat two nationally ranked players and took the No.25 ranked player to three sets in the final round.

Also making her home debut will be freshman Gabriela Rangel of Hendersonville, Tenn.   Sophomore Laura van de Stroet and senior Mimi Renaudin will team up in doubles and also play singles.   Junior Soledad Podlipnik will participate in doubles.
