Goff Tabbed All-SEC First Team By League Coaches

11/5/2008 | Women's Basketball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Ole Miss senior center Shawn Goff continues to add to her growing list of preseason accolades as she was selected to the preseason All-SEC first team by the conference coaches Wednesday morning the league office announced.

During the SEC’s annual Basketball Media Days in late October, Goff was also one of five players to earn preseason All-SEC first team plaudits as voted on by a select panel of local and national media.  The Tallahassee, Fla., native was also a member of the All-SEC second team at the conclusion of last season.

Goff finished the season ranked first on the team and 12th in the SEC with 13.0 points per game.  The Tallahassee, Fla., native also pulled down 6.8 rebounds per game to stand second on the team and 13th in the conference.  At the conclusion of the season, Goff was one of three finalists for the Cellular South Gillom Trophy, awarded annually to the top women’s college basketball in the state of Mississippi.

Goff also posted gaudy numbers on the defensive end of court as she stood as one of the top shot blockers in the country.  In fact, she finished the year ranked second in the league and 28th in the country with 2.31 blocked shots per game.  Goff ended the season with 67 rejections to set the single-season school record for blocked shots, surpassing the 60 rejections recorded by Susan Byrd during the 1993-94 season.  During the course of the season, Goff turned in 16 games in which she recorded at least three blocked shots, including a career-high six rejections against Miami.

In Ole Miss’ first exhibition game of the season Tuesday night at Tad Smith Coliseum, Goff picked up right where she left off as she tallied 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in just 22 minutes of action in helping the Rebels to a 77-45 victory over DT-3.

Auburn senior guard DeWanna Bonner was named SEC Women's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year.  Joining Bonner on the All-SEC First Team were Florida's Marshae Dotson and Sha Brooks, Georgia's Ashley Houts, LSU's Allison Hightower, Goff, Tennessee's Angie Bjorklund, and Vanderbilt's Christina Wirth.

Goff and the Rebels return to the court Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. to take on Christian Brothers University in the final exhibition game of the season.  Admission is free.
