Diamond Rebels Announce Signing Of Cooper, Lowery

12/1/2008 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss baseball program continued to add to its signing class with the addition of left-handed pitcher Jordan Cooper and outfielder Zach Lowery, head coach Mike Bianco announced on Monday.

Cooper and Lowery are the latest announced additions to the 2009 recruiting class, joining right-handed pitcher David Renfroe, catcher Miles Hamblin and right-hander Eric Callender.

Now a senior at Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tenn., Cooper has posted a 16-3 record and is undefeated in playoff action as he has posted a pair of wins and a save the past two seasons and has helped lead Farragut to two State Championships. As a junior, Cooper was 7-1 with three saves and struck out 84 batters while walking only 12.

Cooper, who is 6-2, 185-pounds,  has been selected All-District twice and has also been named All-KIL Players as a junior and earned TBCAA Super Sophomore honors the year before. He was been invited to the East Coast Pro Showcase and the Area Code Games and in the Perfect Game National Showcase this past summer, he struck out six of the seven batters he faced.

Cooper selected the Rebels over Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, Vanderbilt, LSU, Tennessee and Alabama.

“Jordan is a very talented left-hander who throws his fastball in the range of 87-90,” said Ole Miss assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Rob Reinstetle. “He also has a good curve ball and excellent change up. He is considered by some as perhaps the top pitching prospect to commit to Ole Miss in the last four years.”

Joining Cooper in the class is outfielder Zach Lowery.

Lowery, a 6-3, 200-pound outfielder is set to join the Rebels from Kennesaw Mountain High School in Atlanta. In his time with the Mustangs, he has helped Kennesaw Mountain to back-to-back Regional Championships (2006, 2007). In 2008, the Mustangs posted an 18-9 record on the season.

The outfielder was rated as a 3-star recruit by Baseball America Magazine and the No. 121 rated recruit by Perfect Game. He selected the Rebels over Tennessee, Kennesaw State and Georgia.

“Zach is a talented athlete for his size,” Reinstetle said. “He has a nice combination of speed and power to his game. His best tool is his bat and he hits for a lot of power. He is a corner outfielder who runs and throws well.”

Both Cooper and Lowery will join the Rebels for the 2009-10 academic year.
