Rebels Add Evan Frazar, Tanner Mathis To 2009 Signing Class

OXFORD, Miss. The Rebel baseball team continued to add to its 2009 signing class with the addition of Evan Frazar and Tanner Mathis, head coach Mike Bianco announced on Tuesday.

Frazar and Mathis are the latest announced additions to the class, joining previously announced signees David Renfroe, Eric Callender, Miles Hamblin, Zach Lowery and Jordan Cooper. The players will be eligible for competition with the Rebels in the 2009-10 academic year.

Frazar signed with the Rebels out of Sit. Pius X High School in Houston, Texas, where the infielder earned All-America honors from Under Armour following the 2008 season. Frazar has played shortstop in high school but can play any position in the field due to his athleticism. He was also rated the No. 92 prospect by Perfect Game.

The 6-1, 200-pound infielder selected Ole Miss over Texas A&M, LSU, Arizona and Miami.

“Evan is a terrific athlete who can play anywhere on the field,” said Ole Miss assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Rob Reinstetle. “He plays shortstop in high school and has good action and has been clocked at throwing 91 mph across the infield. He has good speed and is an accomplished hitter who has a chance to hit for a lot of power.”

Also joining the Rebels is outfielder and left-handed pitcher Tanner Mathis. Mathis signed with the Rebels out of Barbe High School in Lake Charles, La., where he helped lead Barbe to the State Championship in 2008.

Mathis was named a Top 50 prospect by The Sporting News as he hit .560 last season with Barbe and also posted a .628 on base percentage. The .560 average is the record for a single season in the history of Barbe baseball. Mathis was also named an All-State selection following the 2008 season.

“Tanner is an athletic player who has had a remarkable career as a two-way player,” Reinstetle said. “He has good speed and gets down the line well. He is a great hitter with good hands, bat control, gap to gap power and a very advanced approach. He gets good jumps in the outfield, reads the ball well and has a good arm. He is your prototypical lead-off guy who can steal bases and has a feel for the bunting game.”

The 6-1, 185-pound Mathis selected the Rebels over LSU, Texas A&M, Southern Miss, Louisiana-Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana.
