Ole Miss Hosts Red & Blue Classic This Weekend

2/27/2008 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss softball will host the Red & Blue Classic at the Ole Miss Softball Complex beginning Friday Feb. 29. The six-team tournament will run through Sunday.

The Rebels will welcome five non-conference teams to Oxford Belmont, Jacksonville State, Louisiana Tech, Stephen F. Austin and Troy for the round-robin affair. A total of 15 games will be played, with all six teams facing each other once.

Ole Miss enters this tournament with an 8-5 record on the season after winning two games last week against Louisville and Nebraska at the Cardinal Classic. Lauren Grill smashed a pair of two-run homers and Becky Nye and Tara Willitt both pitched complete-game shutouts to lead Ole Miss to the victories.

The Rebels hold a combined 10-3 record against this weekend’s five visitors. Ole Miss is 5-0 all time versus Belmont, has lost the only meeting with Jacksonville State, is tied 1-1 with Louisiana Tech, owns a 4-1 advantage over Stephen F. Austin and has never faced Troy.

Belmont enters the classic with a 4-3 record on the year, Jacksonville State is 7-5 on the season, Louisiana Tech holds a 5-5 record, Stephen F. Austin is 10-3 and Troy sits at 8-5 this year.

Sophomore Alise Doubt leads the Rebels with a .417 batting average on the season. Grill has a team-high 12 RBI this year and freshman Lindsey Perry has a 0.72 ERA and three wins.

This weekend’s Ole Miss games are slated for 4 and 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday. Ticket information is available through the Ole Miss Ticket Office by calling 662-915-7167. Live in-game statistics will be available for all 15 games on www.OleMissSports.com.
