Lady Rebel Netter Recruiting Class Ranked No. 12 In Nation

2/4/2008 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss women’s tennis team, coming off two wins this past weekend, received some good news Monday.  The Lady Rebels’ 2008-09 recruiting class was ranked No. 12 in the nation by TennisRecruiting.net.

The 2008-09 recruiting class includes Grenada, Miss., native Kristi Boxx, and Gabriela Rangel of Hendersonville, Tenn.

Boxx has been a blue-chip recruit throughout her junior career and is ranked No. 23 in the nation.   Rangel is ranked No. 36 in the nation.

“To be ranked 12th nationally is really exciting,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “The voters realized we have two quality players coming in.  Kristi has been one of the top junior players for awhile.  She will make an immediate impact.  Gabriela will be able to play right away next year.  To be ranked among the national powerhouses is very gratifying.  Our fans are going to enjoy watching these two players over the next several years.

“With this year’s three freshmen playing right away, and next year’s class, the future looks bright.  These are exciting times for Ole Miss Tennis.”

The Lady Rebels improved to 3-2 this past weekend with a 7-0 win over Southern University, followed by a 6-0 win against Troy on Super Bowl Sunday.

All three of the freshmen have played this spring, including two in the top three of the lineup.  Freshman Karen Nijssen is undefeated at No. 2 singles and 4-1 at No.1 doubles.

Ole Miss returns to the courts Sunday, Feb. 10 as they host Louisville at 1 p.m., at the Gillom Sports Center.
