Softball Rebels Drop A Pair To Auburn

3/15/2008 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Rebels dropped a pair of games Saturday afternoon from the Ole Miss Softball Complex, falling to Auburn 3-1 in game one before dropping game two 5-0 to the Tigers.

Game One

Ole Miss (14-11, 0-5 SEC) struck first by plating a run in the second inning as the Rebels turned a Tiger error into a run to take an early 1-0 lead.  Ole Miss started the frame with a one out single up the middle from right fielder Lauren Rowe.  After Rowe advanced to second following a walk to first baseman Morgan Button, Rowe came around to score two batters later as a throwing error on Auburn shortstop Kyndall White allowed Rowe to scamper home.

Auburn (24-4, 4-1 SEC) answered with three runs in the top of the third inning to open up a 3-1 advantage.  Krista Clyde led things off for Auburn as she was walked to start the inning. Cassie Trosclair followed with a bunt single to the pitcher to put runners on first and second before Brittany Scott followed with a single to center field to load the bases.  Tiger left fielder Myesha Finney put the Tigers ahead 2-1 as she singled down the left field line to plate both Clyde and Trosclair.  Taryn Gray added an RBI single in to cap the inning for the visiting Tigers.

Tiger starting pitcher Brittany Day (7-1) picked up the win after allowing one run on five hits in four innings of work.  Anna Thompson earned her third save of the season after striking out six and walking only one over the final three innings.

Rebel starting pitcher Tara Willitt suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits in two innings of work.  Becky Nye pitched the final five innings and allowed just two hits while striking out three Tigers.

Game Two

Auburn starting pitcher Angel Bunner scattered three hits over five innings en route to her fifth win of the season as the Tigers earned a 5-0 win Ole Miss in game two Saturday afternoon.

Nye earned the start for the Rebels in game two and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and she pitched the full seven innings for Ole Miss.

After two scoreless innings, the Tigers broke through with three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.  Trosclair opened the frame with a single into right field before reaching second on the following play on a bunt from Brittany Scott.  After Finney was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Gray singled up the middle to drive home Trosclair and Scott to put Auburn ahead by two runs.  Two batters later, third baseman Starr Dorsey produced a sacrifice fly to right field to account for the third run.

The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning as catcher Tatiana Fernandez delivered a two run double down the right field line to put Auburn out in front 5-0.  Scott started things with a one out single to center before Finney was hit by a pitch for the second time to put runners on first and second.  Following a strikeout by Gray, Fernandez plated both runners as her double fell just inside the foul line in right field.

Ole Miss threatened with a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, but was unable to push across any runs despite having the bases loaded with no outs.  Rebel third baseman Lauren Grill drew a walk to open the inning and advanced to third on the following play as Ashley Dowdy’s grounder was misplayed on the infield, putting runners on the corners and chasing Bunner from the game in the process.  Thompson was again called on in relief and immediately hit catcher Amber Tramp to fill the bases with Rebels.  Thompson, however, answered by inducing Rowe a foul out to third before striking out the next two Rebels to thwart any comeback opportunities.

Ole Miss returns to action Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. from the Ole Miss Softball Complex as the Rebels put the finishing touches on their three-game series with Auburn.
