Ole Miss Tops Central Arkansas 6-2

3/18/2008 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. Aided by a two-out, three-run double by freshman Molly Goza, the Ole Miss Rebel softball team (15-12) topped the Central Arkansas Bears (2-21) by a score of 6-2 on Tuesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

With the bases loaded and the Rebels trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Molly Goza stepped to the plate and knocked a double into right to clear the bases and give Ole Miss a lead they would not relinquish. Goza finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate with a team-high three RBI.

“We had to do some different things with the line-up today and Molly came up with a timely hit to give us some runs that we needed,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson.

The Bears took an early lead in the top of the third when a single by Brittnay Bearden went through the legs of Rebel left fielder Alise Doubt allowing two runs to score on the error.

Ole Miss would add three more runs in the fourth. Doubt reached on a fielding error by Central Arkansas to start the inning and was followed by a single by Courtnie Ghinaudo. Lauren Grill would double to right center with one out to score Doubt and Ghinaudo and would later score on a by single by Aly Presswood.

Grill finished the day 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Ghinaudo added two singles and two runs scored in the lead-off spot.

Lindsey Perry (4-2) picked up the win for Ole Miss after pitching the first 4.0 innings. She struck out three batters and allowed no earned runs. Becky Nye entered in relief of Perry and pitched 2.0 innings. Tara Willitt entered in the seventh and pitched the final frame.

The Bears threatened in the top of the first when Mady Lombard doubled to lead off the game and advanced to third on a sac bunt. However, Perry induced a groundout and a strikeout to end the inning.

The Rebels will host in-state foe Mississippi State for a three-game series beginning with a double header on Friday at 3 p.m. Saturday’s clash between the Rebels and the Bulldogs will be televised by Fox Sports South beginning at 1:00 p.m.
