OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Rebel softball team used timely hitting and outstanding pitching to sweep a pair of games from Jacksonville State and Troy on the final day of the Rebels’ Red and Blue Classic. With the sweep, the Rebels (13-5) finished their home tournament with a perfect 5-0 record and are off the best start since the 2005 campaign.

The Rebels found their bats late and took Troy to extra innings, before beating the Trojans 2-1 in eight innings in the final game of the day.

Ole Miss produced three hits in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by Ashley Dowdy’s double that allowed Lisa Conchos to score, tying the game at one. After holding the Trojans in the top of the eighth, a sacrificed bunt by Lauren Rowe and a sacrifice fly by freshman Morgan Button brought in Amber Tramp, who entered the game in accordance with the international tie-breaker rule, from second and sealed the Rebels’ seventh straight win.

“We showed a lot of heart today,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “Jacksonville State and Troy are two good teams and we knew we couldn’t take them for granted. We got great pitching and the sac fly from Morgan Button was huge, especially for a freshman.”

For the Rebels, sophomore Becky Nye (6-1) picked up the win, after relieving freshman Lindsey Perry in the seventh. Perry gave up one run on three hits with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work, while Nye only gave up one hit with one strikeout.

Ashlyn Williams pitched a complete game for the Trojans. Before the seventh, Williams only allowed four hits, and recorded six strikeouts on the day.

The Trojans jumped on the board in the second, as Courtney Davis scored on a sacrifice fly by Hillary Hughes, after reaching base on a double.

The top of the Rebels’ order came through, as both Lisa Conchos and Lauren Grill went 2-for-3, while Lauren Rowe and Alise Doubt rounded out Ole Miss’ seven hits.

Game One

Lisa Conchos led off the sixth inning with a single and was driven in on a double by Ashley Dowdy to give Ole Miss a 2-1 victory over Jacksonville State in the first game on the final day of the Red and Blue Classic.

Dowdy led the Rebel offense with a 2-for-3 game and an RBI. Lauren Grill had one hit and one RBI, while Conchos finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Ole Miss struck in the first inning, as Alise Doubt drew a walk to lead off the game and moved to second on a sac bunt by Conchos. She scored on the next play, as Grill slammed an RBI double off the left-center wall.

Rachel Fleming and Chrissy O’Neal both led off the fifth with singles for Jacksonville State. Fleming would score on a single by Kayla Collins to tie the game at one.

The Gamecocks mounted a threat in the bottom of the second, as the first two batters reached base on a single and a hit by pitch. However, starting pitcher Tara Willitt settled in and recorded three-straight outs to strand runners at second and third.

Jacksonville State would once again put runners on second and third with no out in the fourth, but Willitt would bear down and record a fly out, a line out and pop out to leave runners on base.

O’Neal led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Nikki Prier reached on a walk with one out to give Jacksonville State runners on first and second, but Becky Nye came in and struck out the next two batters to earn the save.

Willitt (5-3) pitched 6.1 innings for the win. She gave up one run, on six hits and struck out seven. Nye recorded the final two outs for her first save of the season.

The Rebels will travel to Gainesville, Fla. to face the No. 5 Florida Gators (24-1) in the SEC opener for both teams. The three-game series will begin on Saturday, Mar. 8 with a double-header and conclude on Sunday.
